Overnight Train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is particularly popular especially among tourists. Hence, the tickets for 2nd Class Sleeper is always sold out pretty quickly. During the day, you will be seating like normal. Upon approaching the night, the staffs will convert the seats to sleepers.
Sleeper coaches comes with AC (air conditioner) and fan for you to choose. Air conditioned coach is more comfortable but coach with fan and open windows are good if you are planning to take photos. The sleeper coach consists of Upper Berth and Lower Berth compartment. Avoid taking the Upper Berth if you are claustrophobic.

Departure Point – Hua Lamphong Train Station & Don Mueang Train Station
Hua Lamphong Train Station, also known as Bangkok train station is the main train station in Bangkok. Train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai will depart from Hua Lamphong and make a stop at Don Mueang Train Station, another train station in Bangkok to pick up more passengers.
Easiest way to get to Hua Lamphong Train Station is by taxi, although the fare might be quite expensive depends on your initial location. From Khao San Road, it takes 20-30 minutes driving depending on the traffic condition. Please note that the traffic in Bangkok can be quite heavy so you are advised to plan your journey and reach the train station early.
Alternatively, you can go to Hua Lamphong Train Station by MRT and stop at Hua Lamphong MRT Station. An underground pathway connects the MRT station to the Hua Lamphong Train Station so you do not have to worry about crossing the busy road during the day.
Don Mueang Train Station is another train station in Bangkok, located just beside the Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok. This is very convenient especially for the tourists because they can directly use the train service once they get off the plane.
Arrival Point – Chiang Mai Train Station
Chiang Mai Train Station is the last train station on the Northern Line railway track. It is located in the city of Chiang Mai but quite far away from the town center (around 4km distance). In the train station, you will find tourist information counter, toilet, food stalls and ticket counter. You can also store your luggage in the station if you want with certain amount of fees.
Transport from Chiang Mai Train Station – To go to the center of the town, you can take:
- Tuk tuk usually cost around 100-200 Baht depending on your bargaining skill.
- Songthaews would cost cheaper around 20 Baht because it works like a minivan and pickup many passengers per ride.
Amenities
Food is served in some of the train and the price is from 100 Baht, although some says the price is not worth the quality. Alternatively, you can also buy food before you board the train.
